On the question of relations between the state and evangelical Christians-Baptists (on the example of the Saratov Volga region)

The article is devoted to the analysis of the relationship between the state and Evangelical Christians-Baptists throughout the history of their existence in the Saratov Volga region. These relationships have gone through a complex and contradictory path from their rejection by the Russian Orthodox Church and the state to the inclusion of the religious community in the social life of society.

Senior personnel of the military-industrial complex of the Penza region in 1941–1945

The article examines certain aspects of the activities of the heads of the military-industrial complex of the Penza region in 1941–1945. The specifics ofthe source base arethe limited corpus of documentsfromthe Penza Region State Archive andthe subjectivity of surveys offactories by local party bodies. The appointment of senior officials in the region considered in the article confirms the all-Union trend. Sometimes the dismissal was accompanied by a transfer to another job.

The evolution of leisure forms in the daily life of Saratov workers in the 1920–1930s

The article examines the evolution of various forms of leisure for Saratov workers in the 1920s and 1930s. When the Bolsheviks came to power, they began to pay great attention to the education of the “new man.” The object of this policy was, first of all, workers, among whom the practices proclaimed by the new government as “remnants of the past” – drunkenness and religiosity – were widespread. The contradictory policy of the party and state authorities towards the alcohol problem has been revealed.

Artels of disabled people as a part of industrial cooperation of Astrakhan Governorate in 1920s

The article analyzes the activities of disabled artels in the 1920s on the territory of Astrakhan Governorate. On the basis of archival material, first introduced into the scientific circulation, two invalid artels were singled out: “Inrybak” and “Ray of Cooperation”. Special attention is paidto production activities, financial indicators, personnel composition,their comparative analysis is carried out. The reasons of achievements and failures accompanying the artels throughout the period of their existence are shown.

Soviet armed formations in the fight against the insurgency in the territory of the Volga German region (March – April 1921)

The article examines one of the episodes of the struggle of Soviet armed formations against the peasant insurgency during the end of the Civil War. We are talking about the suppression of an uprising in the territory of the Volga Germans in March – April 1921.

The activities of the Saratov Provincial Commission of the State Agricultural Committee on combating bribery in the 1920s

The article examines the activities of the anti-bribery commission under the Saratov Provincial Council of National Economy. The methods of the commission’s work and strategies for combating corruption in Soviet economic bodies in the early 1920s are analyzed. The author studies the results of the commission’s activities as one of the first purges in Soviet bodies after the approval of the NEP. 

Training of military personnel for the Red Army in Volsk during the Civil War (1918–1922)

The article examines the history of military educational institutions evacuated to the city of Volsk during the Civil War. The role of the Volsky machine gun courses and the Kronstadt diving school in the training of commanders for the Red Army and the Red Army is explored. The contribution of Volsky cadets in the defeat of Popov’s detachments in the Saratov Volga region and their participation in the struggle for the establishment of Soviet power in Transcaucasia and Central Asia is studied.

Participation of the German population of Saratov Province in the charitable activities of the local branch of the Russian Red Cross Society (1870s – early XX century)

The article deals with the problem of previously unexplored charitable activities of the Volga Germans within the framework of the functioning of the Saratov branch of the Russian Red Cross Society. Particular attention is paid to the characterisation of the charity of the local German population of the county towns and villages. It is stated that the types and forms of German charitable activity did not differ from those inherent in the rest of the population of the province.

“The merciless Cholera Riot of the mob”: Causes and nature of mass popular riots in the Saratov Province in the 19th century

The article is devoted to the problems of social unrest caused by cholera epidemics in Russia in the 19th century. The subject of the author’s research is regional problems, namely the events that took place in the Saratov province, which still remain poorly studied in historiography. Based on the analysis of documentary materials stored in the State Archives of the Saratov Region, the causes and consequences of the “cholera riots” in the Saratov province are revealed.

The assistance of the population of Saratov and the region to hospitals during the Great Patriotic War

During the Great Patriotic War, the rear areas of the country became centres where a network of evacuation and local hospitals was created. One of those regions was the Saratov Volga region. The paper considers the patriotic movements that unfolded in Saratov and the region to provide various assistance from the population to hospitals in which wounded soldiers and officers of the Red Army were treated. The author comes to the conclusion that people of the city and villagers immediately responded to the calls of the local authorities for help.
