N. A. Milyutin in memoirs and epistolary heritage of his wife M. A. Milyutina

The article analyses "The Notes" by M. A. Milyutina and her correspondence with I. S. Turgenev, published in "Russkaya Starina", and also archive documents from Milyutin's Fund (RGIA, F. 869. Op. 1. D. 1149). The studied materials provided new features to N. A. Milyutin's biography, showed the backstage struggle in the most complicated period of the reformer's activity (mid-1850s to early 1860s) and revealed the peculiarities of his character in his relations with his wife, the like-minded people and the conservative opposition. 

Eugene Tour – a memoirist of the Russo-Turkish war of 1877–1878

The article deals with the memorial heritage of the Russian writer and journalist E. V. Salias de Tournemire. Her memories are devoted to a significant event of the XIX century. - Russo-Turkish war of 1877–1878. The author analyzes the views of the memoirist concerning the causes and course of hostilities with the Ottoman Empire, shows the impact of public forces in the country's foreign policy.

The Pamir campaigns (1891–1894) in the memoires of their participants

Based on the works of Russian military travelers and explorers B. L. Grombchevski and B. L. (Rustam-Bek) Tageev, the one of the episodes of the Great Game between Russia and the British Empire for supremacy in Central Asia is considered. The report focuses special attention on the situation in this region, the reasons for the campaigns, the local geography of Pamir, the relations between the locals and the Russian army.

«The Аthlete of the revolution»: strokes to the historical & psychological portrait of B. V. Savinkov

In this paper, using anthropological, historical and psychological techniques, the identity of one of the most controversial and prominent figures of revolutionary terrorism – Boris Viktorovich Savinkov - is investigated. Analyzing the texts of V. Ropshin’s fiction works, memoires and official documents, the author attempts to describe the inner world and the moral and ethical attitudes of Savinkov, and thus add some specific features of the historical portrait of the one of the key figures of the Russian revolutionary era at the beginning of the XX century.

A Peasant family in the North in the XVI–XVII centuries: generalization and interpretation of the Soviet period studies

This article compiles historical and demographic research on the structure of a peasant family in the North in the XVI - XVII centuries. Conclusions of the authors of the Soviet period are reviewed in accordance with the currently accepted classification of the families of Peter Lasletta. Special attention is paid to the peculiarities of methods of determining the family structure in the XVI century.

The Istoben Trinity Monastery in the XVII - early XVIII centuries: sociocultural and economic aspects

The purpose of the article is to consider the conditions and factors of the creation and development of small monasteries in the Vyatka and Velikopermskaya Diocese in the XVII – the first quarter of the XVIII centuries illustrated by the Istoben Trinity Monastery. Special attention is focused on the study of the economic, social and spiritual aspects of life in the monastery. The article shows how the local features of the monasticism developed with the all-Russian processes in the background. 

The furniture decoration of the Winter Palace’s Yellow Drawing Room. A. de Montferrand, 1827–28

In the furniture collection of the State Hermitage there is a suite of furniture designed by Auguste de Montferrand in 1827-1828. As the famous architect’s contribution to decorative arts has not been studied thoroughly yet, the attribution of the furniture created for the one of the Winter Palace ceremonial apartments, the Yellow Drawing Room of Empress Maria Fiodorovna, is a subject  of a particular interest.

Historical and biographic studies are gaining relevance in national historiography. In this article, the timeline of the Adyghe enlightener and public figure Sultan Khan-Girey is traced, and also his public and publicistic activity is revealed. The progressive views of the enlightener are asserted on the basis of the carried-out analysis.

The history of the Development of Zemsky Reform Concept: “Observations on Zemsky Establishing Project” by N. A. Milyutin

The paper focuses on one of the important aspects of zemsky reform preparation - N. A. Milyutin's observations on Valuev's preliminary draft of zemstvo establishment (Preliminary Essay). The polemic sharpness of Milyutin's “observations” that occured due to promoting his own self-governance model has been traced.

Dmitrii A. Miliutin on foreign theory of military geography

The paper is devoted to the comparative analysis of foreign military theoreticians’ works by the Russian military historian, statistician, one of the founders of “The Russian school” of military statistics and future Minister for War and reformer Dmitrii A. Milutin in his fundamental two-volume work “First Experiments in Military Statistics”. The works which dealt with descriptions of state armed forces in the 18th – the first half of the 19th centuries lacked a complex approach in the study of the state military potential.
