Socio-Economic, Political, Cultural and Religious Development of Japan at the Turn of the 6th–7th Centuries by the Shōtoku Constitution
The paper focuses on the article-by-article analysis of the Shōtoku Constitution, where information about the political system, social structure, cultural and religious climate in Japan at the turn of the 6th-7th centuries is presented. The author pays attention to borrowing from Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism, which is included in the document. Using the ideas taken from canonical texts, the Japanese legislator urges the patrimonial elite to overcome hostility between kinship groups, to increase the efficiency of the state apparatus, to rationalize agricultural activity and to build trust between different segments of society. As the finding of the research, it is concluded that the author of the Constitution not only consistently proves the imperial house’s claims to the supreme power over all inhabitants of the archipelago but also, guided by ideas from classical texts, constructs the desired image of Japanese statehood.
