The evolution of leisure forms in the daily life of Saratov workers in the 1920–1930s

The article examines the evolution of various forms of leisure for Saratov workers in the 1920s and 1930s. When the Bolsheviks came to power, they began to pay great attention to the education of the “new man.” The object of this policy was, first of all, workers, among whom the practices proclaimed by the new government as “remnants of the past” – drunkenness and religiosity – were widespread. The contradictory policy of the party and state authorities towards the alcohol problem has been revealed.

The work of student clubs of universities of the Ukrainian SSR as a means of organizing leisure during the “Khrushchev thaw”

The article deals with the leisure of students of the Ukrainian SSR in 1953–1964 on the example Kyiv State University, Kharkov State University, Odessa State University, Lviv State University and Stalin State Pedagogical Institute. Attention is paid to the cultural recreation of students,the activities of student clubs in higher educational institutions andthework of various amateur art circles, which provide an opportunity for the comprehensive development of personality.

Entertainment as a Part of Leisure Activities in Lifestyles of Americans During Great Depression

This article studies the role of entertainment in leisure of Americans in 1930s. It attempts to analyze the reasons for changes in the lifestyles of Americans during Great Depression and to investigate the factor which can explain the extraordinary popularity of film industry among different layers of American society.

Sphere of Official Leisure of Soviet People in the 1960s: a Dichotomy of the Collective and Individual (Based on the Materials from the Saratov Region)

The paper regards the behavioral and leisure practices of society and government policy in the field of culture and leisure in the 1960s, which demonstrated the shifts at the social level and in the public consciousness. Methods of integrating party policies and initiatives of common Soviet people in organization and regulation of free time are considered. The use of archival material on in the Saratov region allows us to highlight the regional aspect of this topic.
