“To live in peace and friendship”: N. S. Khrushchev’s view on the normalization of Soviet-American relations (based on the materials of speeches during a trip to the USA in 1959)

The article discusses N. S. Khrushchev’s trip to the USA in September 1959. The unprecedented event is considered in the context of the establishment of Soviet-American relations, and the main focus is on the speeches of the head of the USSR, his view on overcoming the Cold War. Using intent analysis as the main research method, the author comes to the conclusion that N. S. Khrushchev tried to transfer relations between the two superpowers into the mainstream of “real politics”, guided not by ideological contradictions, but by mutual benefits.

Housing Issue Mid-1970s as a Problem of Social Arrangement in the USSR

The social aspects of life are considered: housing legislation and the degree of provision of the USSR population with living space. By the example of citizens’ letters to the central authorities and newspapers, the problem of public relations to the process of bourgeoisie of the nomenclature elite is insufficiently covered in historical science. The conclusion is formulated that the statement of private ownership psychology among officials contributed to the weakening of proper control over capital construction.
