Great Britain and the Maastricht Treaty on European Union (1992)

The article describes the ratification of Maastricht treaty on European Union by British parliament. Particular attention is paid to the role of Prime Minister John Major in the framing of a treaty and its acceptance in the context of escalated intraparty and interparty relations.

The British Army in 1930s: Activity of Secretaries of State for War A. Duff Cooper and L. Hore-Belisha

The article reviews the activities of Secretaries of State for War of Great Britain, Alfred Duff Cooper and Leslie Hore-Belisha on specific issues of modernization of British land forces during the period of 1936–1939. The work is based mainly on archival material: memoranda and conclusions of the British Cabinet, which are available on the official site of the National Archives of Great Britain.

On the Threshold of the Peace Conference: Anglish-Irish Treaty of 1921

The article deals with the events preceding the signing of the AngloIrish Treaty in 1921. Particular emphasis is placed on the analysis of correspondence between the British Prime Minister David Lloyd George and President of the unrecognized Republic of Ireland, Eamon De Valera. Analysis of the documents shows a spectrum of conflicts both within the UK government, and among Irish nationalists.

The Works on the Social History of England Represented in the Translation from the Foreign Languages in Russia on the Eve of XIX–ХХ Centuries

The activity on incorporation of the foreign works on social development of England into the intellectual space of Russia is analyzed in the article. The translations into Russian of the works of the outstanding European historians, political science specialists, lawyers, sociologists had become an important and natural respond to the social need in learning of the western and especially British experience, in comparison of the distinctive national development with the achievements of the other peoples.

Enterpretation of English Revolution of the XVII Century by M. M. Kovalevsky

The article is concerned with the contribution of one of the most famous Russian liberal scientists to the history of English revolution research – the important problem of European modern history. It was the first contribution to scientific elaboration of this subject in Russia.

The Theoretical Bases of the «Mohammedan Renaissance» in the British India in Last Third of XIX Century

This article contains the brief analysis of the theoretical bases of «Mohammedans Renaissance» in the British India in the last third of XIX century. The author analyzes the publications of W. S. Blunt, W. H. Gregory, M. R. Ahmad, Khawji Ghulam-us-Saqlain on this problem. The author is of the opinion that the British politics and Mohammedan intellectuals created the effective model of modernization of Mohammedan community in British India. 

An Education of Sense of Imperial Unity for BritishCanadian Youth in 70s of XIX Century (Based on Materials of Canadian Education Literature)

The article is devoted to the estimate complex ideas which were schooled to the British Canadians schoolchildren during lessons of history in 70s of XIX century and the research process formation of the conception for Canadians youth about population’s unity of mother country and colonies – imperial unity.

Olga Novikov, through the Eyes of Her Contemporaries

The article deals with the life and activity of Russian writer and publicist Olga Novikov, who lived in London in the second half of the XIX century. Special attention is given to Olga Novikov’s relationship with the eminent British statesmen and intellectuals, particularly with the leader of the Liberal party W. Gladstone. The author analyses the views of Olga Novikov’s contemporaries on the role she played in the social and political life of Great Britain and in the development of the Anglo-Russian relations.

«Strangers in Parliament!»: the Procedural Incident of 1875 (from History of Political Culture of the Victorian England)

The article is devoted to history of periodicals in Great Britain in a context of evolution of democratic institutes of the British society. The problem is considered on an example of one of bright episodes of history of the British parliamentarism of 1875. Work is based on materials of the British parliament, the press, memoirs.

The Trial in Parliament over the Duke of Marlborough: Verity or Falsification?

The article examines the judicial process in the British Parliament over John, the Duke of Marlborough, accused of embezzlement of funds and assignment of invested significant sums. The author suggests that Tory Parliament sought to justify Marlborough’s denial of all his command posts and his dismissal of high politics. In this sense, charges of the Duke were largely falsified.
