The initial stage of ideological formation of Puritanism in the course of Reformation in England

The article deals with the origin of ideological prerequisites of Puritanism as a trend in the Church of England which appeared in the course of Reformation. The author traces penetration of Reformation ideas to England from European continent before the beginning of King’s Reformation by Henry VIII (1509–1547) in 1534 and shows the beginnings of English religious emigration on the Continent from 1520s which was formed by Englishmen who were adherents of continental Reformed churches.

The author investigates the problem of a criminal biography establishment as a form of event history interpretation. On the example of the famous London criminal Jonathan Wilde’s biography by D. Defoe we show how a real historical character life was being transformed into a myth that gained independent life in the collective consciousness and reflected in different spheres of artistic culture over the next centuries. Throughout the paper the writer structures the facts, leading the reader to the logical conclusion about the hero’s tragic fate.

The material from the correspondence of Lady Honour Lisle and Sir Arthur, Viscount Lisle, reveals topics that were discussed between spouses. Geoffrey Chaucer’s Vicious Aristocracy and Virtuous Workers

Geoffrey Chaucer is a representative of an early English humanistic literature, who in his «The Canterbury tales» managed to show the whole panorama of social life in England of the XIV century. His short stories reflect the epochal change, the formation of new values and a new elite. Chaucer notes the degradation of the secular and spiritual aristocracy, welcomes the enrichment and strengthening of the third estate, connects it with the future of their country, admires workers-peasants that preserved the moral purity of the «corrupt age» of the poet.

Ordeals in Anglo-norman England

The article deals with ordeals («iudicium Dei») and their features after the Conquest compared with those of Anglo-Saxon age and contemporary continental practice. An introduction of the trial by battle, well-known in France, but unknown in England prior to 1066 is given. Meanwhile, common for pre-Conquest ordeal by hot iron was continued to be used with the help of the English Church, which controlled it. In addition it must be kept in mind that there are few real cases of ordeals known from sources, contradictory to the subsequent age of the Plantagenets.

В статье рассматривается проблема восприятия судебно-правовой системы Англии антиквариями XVI века. На материале «Описания елизаветинской Англии» У. Гаррисона и «Британии» У. Кэмдена автор показывает, что ранние антикварии обосновывали идею преемственности английской судебной системы от правовой культуры англосаксов и элементов континентального права, отмечали смешанный характер английской судебно-правовой системы, многообразие и многоуровневость ее институтов.
