The London Ruling Elite of the 14th–16th centuries: the hierarchy of statuses and power

Autors:
Chernova Larisa Nikolayevna, Saratov State University
Abstract:

In the context of the “new social history” the article analyzes the structure of the power institutions of London and the hierarchy of the socio-professional and administrative-official statuses within the frame of the ruling city elite in the XIV–XVI centuries. The author turns to the analysis of the most important top-down city corporation, formed by the aldermen; exposes the criteria of this corporation’s formation, its inner hierarchy, determined by the very structure of London’s City Council, by the aldermen’s belonging to different livery companies and their social and political interests. These factors not only influenced directly the scale of the municipal activity of the aldermen class’ hierarchic groups and defined their llevel of loyalty to the powerhouse – the royal power, but also gave way to serious controversy and conflicts inside the ruling elite, often being the cause of its renewal.
